Nike Air Rift Trainers

NAVY/WHITE

FIRST AVAILABLE AROUND 1996

And now, at long last the actual true origin of The Rift...In the early ’90s designer Kip Buck wanted to run the Leadville 100 (The 100-mile ultramarathon) so he needed to make a shoe that could hold up over 100 treacherous mountain miles. Inspired by the Tara Humara Indians who would cobble together shoes from tires before a race, he came up with the Rift. He stripped out everything he didn’t need - the top of the upper, part of the heel and he used a Velcro brand closure so the Rift could expand and still fit perfectly. Meant to feel like running barefoot, the shoe also had split toes taken from Japanese shoes so he could also flex and use his toes when running. A masterpiece and a cult classic legend!
