HOW NIKE BECAME NIKE Back before trainers had the Nike Swoosh logo and long before Nike was called Nike, there was Blue Ribbon Sports. It started in 1964 with a handshake between two visionary Oregonians - legendary track coach Bill Bowerman and his University of Oregon runner Phil Knight. The plan was simple. To provide athletes with better trainers. In 1971 Blue Ribbon Sports introduced the concept of the Greek winged Goddess of Victory—Nike. The rest is history.
